SMCLA Presents: You Got Schooled! The Role of Social Media in Education

Education is always in a state of change. However, how does Social Media & Technology impact education today? What is a University's strategic vision for teaching with technology? What is the role of Moodle, Blackboard, MOOC and E-Learning? What roleSMCLA_MayGraphicdoes technology play in the public school education system? How do you reach the underserved communities for success? What ideas are emerging from the entrepreneurial sector, and ultimately, where is it all leading? Our panel will attempt to sort out the opportunities and challenges that are unqiue to the educationalspace, yet are applicable to the ever-changing Social Media landscape.About the PanelistsPearl Arredondo (@Pearlsfiam)- Teacher/Education Advocate, San Fernando Institute for Applied MediaArredondo, a tireless advocate for public education and technology-based curriculum, is a National Board Certified 6th grade teacher. She has been featured on TED Talks Education and in 2010, she was part of a teacher-led team that founded San Fernando Institute for Applied Media (SFiAM), the first pilot middle school established in the LA Unified School District. As a Teach Plus Policy Fellow she met with President Obama’s senior advisors to discuss elevating the teaching profession. This year she received the “Inspirational Teacher Award” from United Way of Greater Los Angeles and was named California Woman of the Year from California Assembly District 39. Beverly Macy - Author/Educator/Thought-Leader in Social Media(@BeverlyMacy)A recognized influencer and thought-leader in social media, Macy is an educator in Executive Marketing courses for the UCLA Business and Management Extension program and a respected professional speaker on real-time social media strategy, big data and analytics, and marketing and branding. She has worked with Fortune 500 companies such as Toyota, The Walt Disney Company, Xerox Corporation, United Healthcare, Qualcomm, and Boeing, Weber Shandwick and more. She is also the co-author of the best-selling book The Power of Real-Time Social Media Marketing, which is used in over 20 universities and is on the shelves of many corporate libraries.Otto Khera - Senior Manager, USC's Center for Scholarly Technology(@uberfahr & @usclearning)Khera is a Sr. Manager at USC's Center for Scholarly Technology where he leads the team that formally assesses online and technology-enhanced instructional strategies. He is also chair of the annual USC Teaching with Technology Conference, a leader in innovation and new media, and a published researcher on technology-enhanced learning. Before joining USC, he led a new media center at Western New Mexico University and in the 1990s, he was assistant director of the Arizona State University's Center for European Studies. Khera was also the cofounder and CEO of Axon Television Network, a 24/7 short film/video cable channel.Eric DeSobe - Associate Director for Teaching & Leadership Development, KIPP LA Schools (@edesobe)A former fourth and fifth grade teacher in Compton Unified School District, DeSobe now recruits and trains teachers for KIPP LA Schools, a network of free, public charter elementary and middle schools, while also working closely with Teach For America, a program he completed in 2003. He’s incredibly proud to be with KIPP LA as the organization has many of the highest performing schools in the state, serving students in communities that traditionally send low numbers of kids to college. DeSobe is also is the two-term President of the Del Rey Neighborhood Council where he serves a community of 30,000 to improve the schools, green spaces, and development projects in his community. A lover of space, DeSobe grew up in near NASA in Houston and has an unhealthy obsession with progressive rock music. ModeratorClint Schaff - VP & US General Manager for DARE/ Adjunct Professor USC Annenberg (@clintschaff)Since 2008, Schaff has taught as an adjunct professor at USC’s Annenberg School for Communication & Journalism, teaching in two distinct graduate programs around Online Communities and Strategic Public Relations. Schaff also serves as the head of US operations (LA & NYC) for DARE, an internationally recognized digital creative agency. In 13 years, Clint has built and led local digital teams for global agencies such as Edelman, GolinHarris, Firestation Agency/Roll Global and M80. In addition, Schaff is active in the local marketing communications community, serving on the boards for SMCLA and PRSA-LA, and is a frequent speaker on digital marketing at events such as BlogWorld, Social Media Week, Digital Hollywood, Digital LA, Silicon Beach Fest, Social Media Breakfast, TECHmunch and more. Parking: There are two garages close by one around the corner on Cardiff St. and one behind Trader Joe's on Culver Blvd. The first 2 hours are free for both garages (only $1/hr after, with an $8 daily maximum).
